Unesa. AC ID. SURABAYA—Athletes or students of the State University of Surabaya (UNESA) also helped lead the East Java Contingent to the top three positions in the XXI Aceh-North Sumatra National Sports Week (PON) standings 2024 which ended on Friday, September 20 2024.
Campus students 'Home of Champions' managed to contribute 123 medals from the total 425 medals won by the East Java contingent. "In detail, there were 36 gold, 47 silver and 40 bronze medals brought by UNESA athletes who took part in dozens of sports," said the Dean of the Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences (FIKK), Dwi Cahyo Kartiko.
He added that the student athletes fielded by UNESA came from various faculties, namely the majority from FIKK, some from the Vocational Faculty, the Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS), and the Professional Teacher Program (PPG).
"After we mapped it out, UNESA student athletes won medals in 31 sports. UNESA won the most medals in swimming with a total of 24 medals. Then there were petanque, triathlon, judo and long cliffs," he explained. < /p>
This achievement not only makes the institution and the people of East Java in general proud, it is also a form of commitment to advancing sports in East Java and Indonesia in general. This is also proof of the success of the athlete development system in UNESA.
The Chancellor of UNESA, Nurhasan, said that the sprinkling of medals donated to East Java was evidence that strengthened the excellence of the 'One Step Ahead' campus in the field of sports Cak Hasan, UNESA's contribution to improving sports performance in East Java is part of UNESA's big efforts to advance sports in the country. "It is hoped that the UNESA medal tradition can be continued in the future, not only in PON, but also in sports competitions at world level or the Olympics." he said.
Cak Hasan hopes that UNESA athletes or students can strengthen the Indonesian contingent in various world-level sports competitions, including the Olympics. He hopes that one of Indonesia's medal contributors at the next Olympics will come from UNESA athletes.
So that the winning tradition is maintained and athletes are increasingly motivated, UNESA is preparing rewards for athletes who excel at PON XXI 2024. One of the rewards will of course be only in the form of a coaching scholarship. The most important thing is that students who win gold medals can be converted into final assignment grades.
In other words, athletes who receive PON medals do not need to write a final project scheme in the form of a thesis as is generally the case. However, in the form of reports or profiling of their experiences, training processes and strategies to win medals. [UNESA PR]
