Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) won a number of sweet rankings this year. One of them is ranked 14 as the best national university or ranked 601-800 out of 1,406 world institutions according to THE Impact Rankings 2022 released by Times Higher Education (THE) on Thursday, April 28, 2022.
THE Impact Rankings are university rankings compiled based on the success of universities in implementing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or sustainable development goals, the United Nations.
Head of the Higher Education Clustering and Ranking Unit, Nadi Suprapto, M.Pd.,Ph.D., said that the achievements of this 'One Step Ahead' campus need to be appreciated. This is because this is the first time that participation in THE Impact Ranking has been able to enter the ranks of the top 15 national best universities.
Nadi explained, THERE are two. First, THE WUR (World University Rankings) was announced last year and UNESA was ranked 18th. Second, THE SDGs Impact Rankings. Well, for the second time, UNESA participated this year with pretty good results. The ranking data is based on the United Nations agency specifically for the SDGs. “In total there are 17 SDGs with the rules of the game, 17 SDGs are mandatory and SDGs 1-16 are optional. Of all the SDGs submitted, the best three will be chosen," he explained.
Three Leading SDGs Enter the Top 10
For the first, this year UNESA submitted a total of 7 SDGs, namely; 1) SDGs 1 on No Poverty. 2) SDGS 3 on Good Health and Well-being. 3) SDGs 4 on Quality Education. 4) SDGs 5 on Gender Equality. 5) SDGs 10 related to Reduced Inequality. 6) SDGs 16 is related to Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. 7) SDGs 17 is related to Partnerships for the Goals. From the number submitted, there are three leading SDGs of UNESA with the highest score.
The first SDGs, No Poverty, ranked 8th nationally or 101-200 out of 769 world institutions. One of the advantages of UNESA in this category is the scholarship program and the reduction in study fees provided to students. This means that through field three and field one it helps students a lot. In addition, it is also supported by research related to poverty.
The fourth SDGs, Quality Education, is ranked 8th nationally or 401-600 out of 1,180 world institutions. As an LPTK, the value of this category is supported by, among other things, quite good educational publications. Then the percentage of first student or first generation student is quite large. For example, a family has two children and their first child is studying at UNESA.
The fifth SDGs, gender equality, ranks 7th nationally or 201-300 in the world from 938 institutions. What makes UNESA superior in this category is because it turns out that both students, staff and lecturers, the percentage of women is above 50 percent. In addition, it is also supported by research and publications related to gender, cooperation between gender equality institutions and external institutions.
Add SDGs, Target Rank Up
“The other SDGs that we submitted are of quite good value, but the highest is the three superior SDGs. The target going forward is to maintain this year's position and even increase it. Next year we plan to increase the number of SDGs, one of which is Climate Action," he said.
In addition, the 17 sustainable development goals that serve as a reference for the ranking are; 1) No Poverty, 2) Zero Hunger, 3) Good Health and Well-being, 4) Quality Education, 5) Gender Equality, 6) Clean Water and Sanitation, 7) Affordable and Clean Energy, 8) Decent Work and Economic Growth , 9) Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, 10) Reduced Inequality, 11) Sustainable Cities and Communities, 12) Responsible Consumption and Production, 13) Climate Action, 14) Life Below Water, 15) Life On Land, 16) Peace, Justice , and Strong Institutions, 17) Partnerships for the Goals.
"Thank you to all parties, lecturers, staff, students, alumni, stakeholders both at home and abroad who supported the UNESA ranking. Thank you to the leadership of UNESA, faculty leaders, heads of departments to study programs, heads of institutions and to all. For our cooperation, sincere work and smart work, it finally bears sweet fruit. Hopefully next year we can improve," he concluded. [UNESA PR]
