Unesa.ac.id. SURABAYAArtificial intelligence (AI) has become an inseparable part of various activities, jobs and tasks in various fields, including education. It could be said that AI is increasingly being 'relied on' by lecturers and students in studying and carrying out certain tasks.
Prof. Syamsul Sodiq, a professor of learning to write at Surabaya State University (Unesa), who conducts research on AI and writing essays or scientific articles, said that the widespread use of AI cannot be separated from the benefits it offers.
First, AI is more efficient or saves time with answers that are to the point. AI can also help with brainstorming and speed up the writing process. Second, provide academic support in the form of assistance in preparing ideas, arguments and hypotheses. It can also increase engagement and motivate students.
Third, AI offers features that are simpler and easier to use. It can also help improve students' writing skills.
These various benefits are one of the reasons why students use AI in doing their assignments. In the context of writing articles or scientific papers, for example, research conducted by the Kediri-born professor found that students had a positive attitude or perception towards AI.
The research was conducted on 330 Unesa second semester students, students of writing material. scientific articles. As a result, many students felt more confident using AI.
Apart from that, students felt they received a lot of useful feedback in terms of writing scientific articles or writing Indonesian essays. They also think AI can correct grammar and sentence structure errors.
Students feel AI helps increase creativity, develop ideas and written arguments. Students also feel more efficient in completing essay assignments in writing Indonesian essays.
Also, students consider AI as a tool to increase the authenticity of their writing in writing Indonesian essays.
Even though it has a multitude of benefits what students feel as users, based on a number of studies, AI also has weaknesses that we all need to be aware of.
First, it makes the credibility and relevance of the output less convincing. Second, because the material is from and produced by machines, there is a tendency for plagiarism.
Third, there are limited references. Because of the work of machines, the work produced is limited, not the same as human work. Machine limitations are different from human limitations.
Fourth, data security risks and algorithm bias. Fifth, university policies are not yet strict. Sixth, there tends to be dependency and reduced competence. "If learning is thinking and the marker of humanity is thinking, then AI is dehumanizing," he said.
In addition, Syamsul Sodiq was born in Kediri, 13 February 1966. He is a lecturer at the Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS ) Unesa teaches and teaches dozens of courses.
He has produced a number of publications and carried out a lot of community service. He was confirmed as a professor in the field of writing learning at Unesa on December 22 2024.[*]
