Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA - Mathematics teachers play an important role in improving numeracy literacy in schools. They are required to have an appropriate and interesting way of teaching students. On that basis, the Masters Program in Mathematics Education, Postgraduate UNESA provided special training for Middle School Mathematics teachers in Lamongan, last week.
The activity which took place online and offline at SMPN 2 Lamongan was attended by around 30 Mathematics teachers. The training focuses on the ability to create or develop context-based Math tasks. The tasks produced by the teacher can be used as a learning and assessment tool.
Dr. Agung Lukito, M.S., a lecturer in the field of Realistic Mathematics Learning, said that context-based assignments are the development of Mathematics learning assignments that are related to contexts that are close or familiar to students' lives.
“In terms of content in Mathematics, there are numbers, algebra, geometry, measurements and so on. For students' cognitive processes, namely understanding, application, and reasoning. As for the context, it can be in the form of personal, socio-cultural and so on,” he said.
Mathematics assignments so far tend to be textual or not very related to students' daily lives. Such a learning style tends to make it difficult for students to understand it. Mathematics will continue to be a complicated and confusing subject.
In fact, learning Mathematics can be fun, if the method or method used by the teacher is right. One way to make learning interesting and students understand it quickly, including the task of contextualizing the material with students' lives or experiences.
Said Dr. Yusuf Fuad, M.App.Sc., a member of the service team, that the output of the activity is Mathematics tasks that teachers can later use in learning Mathematics in their respective schools. In addition to training, the team will also provide online assistance in the future.
“Hopefully, SMP Mathematics teachers in Lamongan will be more creative and innovative in teaching students. That way, students are happy and quickly understand learning numeric material which can later improve students' numeracy literacy there, "he hoped.
This service activity involves a number of experts, namely Dr. Yusuf Fuad, M.App.Sc., Mathematical Modeling expertise; Dr. Agung Lukito, M.S., area of expertise for Realistic Mathematics Learning; Dr. Rini Setianingsih, M.Kes., expertise in Mathematics Learning Psychology; and Dr. Endah Budi Rahaju, M.Pd., Expertise in Mathematics Learning Assessment.
