"It's not scary, but from a health perspective, staying up late can cause various health problems," said Dr. Rahmantio Adi, Sp.PD., Lecturer Faculty of Medicine (FK)State University Surabaya (UNESA).
He added that people who stay up late generally experience disturbed sleep patterns, decreased ability to concentrate, tend not to focus, and have the potential to cause anxiety disorders.
Apart from that, you are also at risk of developing chronic diseases. "It's best if you have nothing to do, it's best to go to sleep immediately, don't use social media until late at night, because the impact is very worrying in the long term," he explained.
According to him, the habit of staying up late can have a serious impact on the body's hormonal system. Disturbances in hormones that control stress and metabolism can increase the risk of high blood pressure, which has the potential to cause heart disease and other blood vessel problems.
In addition, the long-term impact of staying up late can also cause weight gain and the risk of diabetes due to impaired insulin work.
The short-term impact is a lack of alertness in carrying out daily activities due to excessive sleepiness. A person will also experience decreased concentration in thinking, remembering and processing information, which can hinder productivity.
A worsening mood can also result in interpersonal conflict. "For those who drive, the risk of accidents increases due to lack of focus and responsiveness. Apart from that, the body's immunity also decreases, thereby increasing susceptibility to disease," said the man who is familiarly called Doctor Tio.
Tips for Mitigating Risk
The lecturer and specialist in internal medicine gave tips for those who have already stayed up late. The method is to reduce caffeine consumption, stop consuming alcohol and smoking, and choosing healthy foods to mitigate the negative impacts.
Even though it is difficult to avoid lack of sleep after staying up late, it is recommended to replace it with enough sleep at loose hours. afterwards. This is important so that the body has the opportunity to get adequate rest, improve the work of the body's hormones, and support overall health.
"When sleeping, it is recommended not to play with cellphones so that you can focus more on the sleep process. necessary for maximum recovery," he concluded.
Even though it is sometimes difficult to avoid, taking steps to mitigate risks is very important. There is no better substitute than giving the body sufficient time to rest through quality sleep.
