Unesa.ac.id. SURABAYA—Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol), Surabaya State University (UNESA) through the PMP-KN Democracy Lab, PPKn Study Program held an online Soft Skills Talkshow with the theme "To Be Smart Digital Citizenship: Ethics Communication in the Digital Era” on Thursday, July 25 2024.
As a speaker, the organizers of the activities included in the Fisipol Week series presented the Principal of the Indonesian Public Speaking and Broadcasting School and lecturer at Padang State University (UNP), Dr. Nofrion, M.Pd. He emphasized the importance of soft skills in the era of globalization and digital communication.
According to him, success in the world of work is not only determined by technical skills, but also the ability to communicate, collaborate and adapt. In the current digital era, changes in information technology have changed the way humans communicate, from face-to-face to virtual communication that is not limited by time and space.
“Students need to understand the importance of building soft skills and communication ethics to deal with challenges in the future," he said in the training the students took part in.
Apart from that, Nofrion also highlighted differences in the way of communicating between generations which can cause misunderstandings. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the importance of using appropriate and polite diction in communicating, especially in formal contexts.
Apart from diction, reflecting after communicating is also important, which can help improve the quality of communication. Also, a good communication cycle needs to be considered which involves thinking, speaking, acting and reflecting.
He emphasized that a good communication process requires awareness of diversity to create a more inclusive environment. Lastly, he emphasized the importance of continuous learning in building good communication skills as the key to expanding network relationships and increasing opportunities in the future.
He advised participants to really understand how to surf in the digital world, including the challenges and opportunities . The digital world leaves traces. Every action and word spoken on social media leaves a trace that can affect the user's reputation.
"Everyone who uses digital devices must understand the impact of every action and word expressed in cyberspace," he said.
Through the presentation of these sources, students are expected to be able to prepare themselves well to face future challenges and be able to become part of a more inclusive and competitive society in the digital era. [*]
