The atmosphere of Basketball for Good activities in Timika City, Papua.
Unesa.ac.id. PAPUA—UNESA Science Center-Center of Excellence for Science and Technology (PUI) Sport and Exercise Research Center, Surabaya State University (SERC UNESA), as FIBA's official educational partner, successfully held the "Basketball for Good" training program at the Mimika Sport Center, Timika City, Papua, on 2-3 December 2024.
This activity is fully supported by PT Freeport Indonesia and involves 20 Physical Education, Sports and Health teachers (PJOK) from 20 schools throughout Timika, as well as enthusiastic participation from 300 students.
This program aims to teach soft skills through the game of basketball, such as teamwork, leadership and discipline. This activity also highlights a local approach, thereby providing relevant experiences for participants, a concept that has received praise from FIBA.
“The approach taken by SERC Unesa is truly impressive. They were able to put together a program that not only taught the game of basketball, but also touched on the cultural values and needs of the local community. "This is an extraordinary collaboration," said one FIBA representative.
For two days, PJOK teachers received intensive training designed to be implemented in their respective schools. Meanwhile, 300 students were involved in various activities to understand the positive values that can be obtained from the sport of basketball.

The teachers expressed their satisfaction with the training and hopes that similar activities can continue to be carried out. “We are very inspired by this program. "There are many new things that we can implement in schools to develop students, both physically and mentally," said one participant.
PT Freeport Indonesia, as the main partner of this activity, also appreciates the program organized by SERC Unesa . They expressed the hope that SERC Unesa would continue to develop similar activities to encourage progress in the world of sports in Timika and its surroundings.
"We believe that activities like this will not only have an impact on sports, but also create a young generation that is better prepared to face the challenges of the future," said a representative of PT Freeport Indonesia.
A series of programs This is planned to continue until February 2025, with the target of reaching more teachers and students in Papua. The presence of PT Freeport Indonesia as a supporting partner also has a positive impact on the sustainability of this program.
