Unesa.ac.id. SURABAYA—Sport is an activity carried out to improve or maintain fitness and health, both mental and physical. Therefore, sports are not limited to competitions, but also include recreational sports.
Professor of sports, recreation and health, Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences (FIKK) Surabaya State University (UNESA), Prof. Andun Sudijandoko emphasized that recreational sports cannot be separated from sports and is a branch of sports for all.
Recreational sports or sports recreation are physical activities in the form of sports carried out in free time with the aim of having fun, reducing stress and improving body health in a relaxed and unhurried manner.
In contrast to competitive sports which emphasize achievement and victory, recreational sports focus more on fun, fitness and relaxation.
Recreational sports are generally carried out by ordinary people (non-athletes) who hope that apart from maintaining fitness and health, they can also get other benefits, namely having fun, reducing stress and so on.
"Examples of recreational sports such as walking, hiking, jogging, cycling, and other sports activities that are carried out with joy," he explained in his inauguration speech as professor at Graha Sawunggaling, UNESA Campus II Lidah Wetan, on 22 Last December 2024.
Deputy Chair I of the East Java Indonesian Community Sports Committee (Kormi) continued that recreational sports, if done at low or moderate intensity and regularly, will have a positive impact on fitness and health.
If this is done with high intensity, it will also result in muscle damage and inflammation. Therefore, he suggested that the type of exercise undertaken needs to be adjusted to suit abilities and needs.
Several studies and observations of people who carry out recreational sports activities, it is not uncommon to find people experiencing DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) or pain. delayed muscle tone after sports activities.
Based on theoretical studies, the incidence of DOMS is closely related to muscle damage and cellular inflammation, so that if it is not treated it will have a negative impact on recreational sports participants (DNA damage and premature aging).
Apart from adjusting the type of exercise, nutritional intake is also needed so that it does not easily cause muscle damage and inflammation. One thing that can be consumed is selenium or supplements from nuts which are extracted in capsule form.
"This is the beginning of the study and development of recreational sports to reduce the risk of muscle damage and post-exercise inflammation," he explained.[*]
