SURABAYA—Surabaya State University (Unesa) was named a campus that cares for people with disabilities by the Indonesian Association of People with Disabilities (PPDI) in Jakarta, on January 13 2025. Recognition This further strengthens the superiority of the 'Growing with Character' campus in the field of disabilities.
Head of Sub-Directorate for Disabilities Unesa, Wagino said that this award was a manifestation of the campus' commitment to creating an inclusive environment for people with disabilities. Unesa has continued to strive to provide equal access, facilities and services for all, including vulnerable groups.
"This award is our motivation to continue to improve the quality of services and expand the positive impact for people with disabilities, both on and off campus, while also emphasizing Unesa's role in promoting social justice through higher education," he said.
Behind the efforts made so far, the main goal of the campus with the tagline 'One Step Ahead' is to provide equal and inclusive access to education for all members of society, including people with disabilities.
This includes providing disability-friendly physical facilities, an inclusive curriculum, academic and non-academic support, as well as a campus atmosphere that encourages acceptance and empowerment.
In addition, to creating an environment that supports the development of the potential, creativity and careers of people with disabilities, so that they can carry out their roles as individuals fully and contribute significantly to society.
The Unesa professor of assistive technology continued, this appreciation also strengthens Unesa's position as a center for the development of assistive science and technology that can reduce the disability barrier in social life.
Currently, Unesa, he continued, is targeting to become a center of excellence in the development of inclusive education at the national and international levels. And can continue to strengthen infrastructure, programs and policies that support people with disabilities.
In line with the Head of Unesa's Disability Innovation Center (DIC), Budiyanto expressed his gratitude to PPDI for the award which was the trigger enthusiasm to continue providing the best services for people with disabilities.
“At least after we get this appreciation, DIC must strive to maintain and improve disability research that prioritizes three aspects, namely communication, assistive technology and work networks," he added.
According to him, this award from the disability organization, which was founded in 1987, is also able to encourage Unesa to continue to carry out research and innovation for the sake of create practical solutions that can improve the quality of life of people with disabilities, such as assistive technology tools, inclusive learning methods, or research-based policies.
"Hopefully this award will encourage the institution to continue to strive to improve research both on and off campus to a broader level. "And together we will make Unesa a disability-friendly campus to gain recognition at regional and international levels," he concluded.[*]
