Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-There are many ways that can be done to empower and increase the life expectancy of the elderly, one of which can be through training and mentoring such as what the UNESA Language and Arts Faculty team of lecturers and students do. They held musical arts training for the elderly at UPTD Griya Werdha, Jambangan, Surabaya.
The training involved 15 elderly people aged 80 years and over. There are even those who have stepped on 100 years. They were trained by experts in musical arts from FBS UNESA, and tools were imported from UNESA. The elderly learn karawitan every Sunday from 08.30-11.00. It has been routinely carried out since early October 2021.
The results of the exercise were performed internally on Sunday, October 31, 2021 at the UPTD Griya Werdha Hall, Jambangan, Surabaya. 15 musicians dressed in traditional costumes appear confident. They seemed agile playing their respective roles. There are those who become vocal, successor bonang beaters, bonang barung, pekingese, demung, to kethuk.
The songs Bang-bang Wus Rahina and Lir-ilir resonated with the strains of music that made the performance feel like an annual traditional music performance. Their action immediately provoked applause from the invited guests. "I salute and touch, they are very enthusiastic, even before the training hours, they are already waiting for us in the room," said the Dean of FBS UNESA, Dr. Trisakti, M.Si at the training location.
He added that the training was based on the collaboration between UNESA and the Surabaya City Government. One form of implementation of this cooperation is in the form of musical training. He continued, the training was based on the results of discussions with the Social Service and the Griya Werdha UPTD and the elderly.
It turned out, in the chat, the elderly missed playing traditional musical instruments. "Yes, we and the Head of UPTD agreed to hold this training (art of karawitan, ed) and we conceptualized it in a simple way," said the woman who is also the leader of the PKM team.
Chief executive Joko Winarko, S.Sn. M.Sn, stated that the purpose of the training was to empower, embrace and create a smile or entertain the elderly. In addition, it is also to prove that age is not a barrier in doing many useful things both for oneself and for others.
“With them (elderly, ed) in this exercise, honestly there is pride for us (UNESA, ed). We can share knowledge and skills with them, we also learn many things from them,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Head of UPTD Griya Werdha, Septarti Hendartini, S.Sos appreciated the activity. The training was carried out offline while still paying attention to the progress, even every guest who came using the PeduliLindung application-based check-in and check-out system.
During the training, the elderly were quite enthusiastic and active. Coupled with fun training schemes and methods to keep the elderly entertained. "So don't be surprised if they are ready in the room early in the morning. At their age, of course, they miss karawitan. This is a very positive activity, especially before the training there is a joint gymnastics activity," he said.
Actively moving and doing activities can indirectly improve the quality of life of the elderly. Then it can reduce the burden of the elderly mind and avoid stress. Therefore, he hopes, this activity will not be the last, but can be continued with various other collaborative activities in the future.
Dr. Trisakti, M.Si revealed that the training and mentoring program will be carried out on an ongoing basis. FBS, he continued, there are 14 study programs (prodi), five art study programs and nine language and literature study programs. He and his team plan to direct service activities in related study programs towards empowering and increasing the life expectancy of the elderly there in the future.
"What is needed here in the future, we try to facilitate, find solutions together and Thursday pack it up in such a way through service programs in the study programs that we have at FBS," he said.
