The service activities of the FK UNESA lecturers were well received by local village residents. Apart from being able to improve tool-making skills and interest in sports, it can also increase awareness of the importance of protecting the environment for health.
Unesa.ac.id. SURABAYA– In order to increase public awareness about the importance of sport while supporting environmental preservation, lecturers at the Faculty of Medicine (FK) of Surabaya State University (UNESA) held community service activities in Balas Klumprik Village on Thursday, November 21 2024.
Sport plays an important role in maintaining physical and mental health. That is what Nur Divine Anjani as the PKM team leader said. His team found that in this area, access to modern sports facilities is still limited.
“Many residents, especially teenagers, do not have adequate facilities to exercise. "In fact, sport not only maintains fitness, but can also be a way to build togetherness in society," he said.
Apart from the problem of sports facilities, Balas Klumprik Village also faces environmental challenges, especially in waste management. Plastic waste and other used items are often not managed properly, thereby polluting the environment. Based on this problem, the community service team from FK UNESA initiated a program to make sports equipment from recycled materials.
This activity begins with collecting used materials, such as plastic bottles, cans, wood and iron. “We held a collection session with local residents. "The response was extraordinary, they were enthusiastic about donating unused items," he explained.
After the materials were collected, the team completed the needs by purchasing several additional tools. The manufacturing process begins with making a sports equipment prototype. One of the tools produced is a barbell, which is made using molds from used cigarette cans, milk cans and paint cans.
To maximize benefits, the team coordinated with local sports field administrators so that the recycled equipment could be placed there. Apart from that, youth organizations and mosque administrators are invited to work together to hold sports activities that utilize these tools.
Extension is an important part of this activity. Residents are taught how to use sports equipment made from recycled materials safely and effectively. They also gain insight into the importance of waste management and the health benefits of exercise.
“We want this activity to be the first step in creating a healthy, active and environmentally friendly village. "Hopefully these sports equipment can be put to good use, and residents can continue this initiative independently in the future," he concluded.
This activity not only provides solutions to the problems faced by residents, but also builds a sense of togetherness . Through synergy between the service team and the community, Balas Klumprik Village now has the opportunity to be more advanced in various aspects, both in terms of health and environmental awareness.[*]
