Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-The Ministry of Religion and the Puspa Sada Setara Foundation in collaboration with the State University of Surabaya held a training entitled Capacity Building for Religious Moderation. The activity was held at the Gunawangsa Manyar Hotel Meeting Room, Surabaya on 26-28 November 2021.
The event which was attended by around 40 UNESA students from various faculties was opened online by Dr. H. Rohmat Mulyana Sapdi, M.Pd., as Secretary of the Directorate General of Islamic Education, Ministry of Religion. In his speech, he revealed that this event aims to invite fellow educational partner institutions to design and increase moderation in religion at the university level.
This annual activity of the Ministry of Religion targets general public universities throughout Indonesia. During the implementation on November 26 to 28, not only UNESA, other universities also carried out the same activities in different locations. These universities include Airlangga University, Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology, Diponegoro University, and Yogyakarta State University.
This understanding of religious moderation is considered important to be instilled in students to avoid extremes in perspectives, attitudes and practices in religion. There were five presenters from various alumni, academics and religious figures who were presented at this event. They are Abdul Maliq, S.Or. Chairman of MWCNU Gayungan District, Surabaya; Iman Pasu Marganda Hadiarto Purba, S.H., M.H., Lecturer of the UNESA Pancasila and Citizenship Education Study Program; Muchammad Syuhada', S.Pd. Staff of the Division of Supervision and Inter-Institutional Relations BAWASLU East Java. In addition, two other presenters were also presented to share their knowledge online for universities implementing religious moderation activities in different places. The two presenters are Ahmad Nadhif and Umm Sholihah, M.Sc.
Ahmad Yusuf Al Khakim, UNESA Student President, stated that the purpose of the activity was to measure student tolerance, as well as to prevent and minimize radicalism in universities, considering that discussions on religious issues were still relatively private and sensitive.
"My hope is for fellow students who are participants in this training to be able to transmit positive viruses, especially in terms of religious moderation and tolerance," said Ahmad Yusuf.
Furthermore, he also stated that the presenters from various circles aimed to give students an understanding that religious moderation needs to be done to maintain consistency and nationalism in Indonesia. (UNESA PR)
