Unesa.ac.id-Surabaya, One of Unesa Student Creativity Program for Entrepreneurship Teams has, again, made another product innovation. This time, the team consisting of Veronica Junior Ayme Surya, Sekar Ayu Prawidyaningrum, Kharisma Titian Haqiqi, Muhammad Faris, and Nana Sofiana invented Collagen Soap made from Milkfish Scales or you can it BUCIN. This team received guidance from Ms. Meta Yanti Dewi, S.Si, M.Si.
The idea of making a soap made from milkfish scales was made based on data from the Ministry of Industry in 2019 which noted that there were 797 cosmetic industries in Indonesia. This data has increased compared to last year's 760 industries. This shows that there is a huge demand for cosmetics in Indonesia. One of these products is soap.
However, the majority of soaps circulating in the community contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). This synthetic active ingredient has a negative effect on human skin, because it has the potential to cause irritation to consumers with sensitive skin such as itching, redness of the skin and also potentially can cause cataracts.
In addition, based on data from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, since 2011-2015, East Java has been ranked first as a producer of milkfish cultivation aquaculture. In Surabaya and its surroundings, there are many sellers of processed food made from milkfish. However, the scales from milkfish oftentimes got thrown away even though in fact, milkfish scales contain collagen which is good for the skin.
BUCIN branding is done through Instagram. The social media was chosen because based on an article released by kompas.com, there are 61,610,000 Instagram users in Indonesia and 71.2% of them are millennials. BUCIN’s Instagram account does not only contain product promotions, but also education about products, including the effect to the environment and health.
Based on research by Retno Budi Lestari and Kardinal, it is said that knowledge affects the interest in buying green products. So that the addition of education to BUCIN’s Instagram account aims to educate more people, to increase people’s interest in buying BUCIN products. Moreover, BUCIN is marketed through marketplaces such as Shopee and Tokopedia.
The main target of BUCIN's market is the millennial generation with over 30 years of age. This business is very potential because no one has produced this kind of innovation. In addition, it is supported by the trend in the last year where the demand for soap is high and the fact that the product will be sold with affordable price of IDR15,000.
BUCIN uses milkfish scales as a source of collagen. This is the advantage of BUCIN, because there’s currently no soap product that uses milkfish scales as a source of collagen. Not to mention BUCIN also uses natural ingredients such as jicama, beetroot, activated charcoal and spinach which can solve several skin problems.
