Unesa.ac.id. SURABAYA—Surabaya State University maintains its achievements in the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Ranking international ranking based on the results of announcements made in the series of Global Sustainable Development Congress activities in Bangkok, Thailand on 11-13 June 2024.
THE Impact Ranking is a ranking agency that measures university performance based on comprehensive excellence in contributing to various UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Excellence in various SDGs also shows the commitment of universities in overcoming world challenges, such as environmental sustainability, social inclusion, economic growth and partnerships. This year, UNESA remains in the world ranking of 601-800 out of 1,906 universities from 108 countries in the world and 15th nationally.
Regarding these achievements, Dr. Bambang Sigit Widodo, Deputy Chancellor for Research, Innovation, Rankings, Publications and Science Center stated that this was still a positive achievement for UNESA. Especially because this year the number of participants increased both from Indonesia and around the world.
“Now many universities are trying to take part in this event so the level of rigor is much higher. "I think maintaining is always more difficult, so this achievement feels quite positive," he said.
Success in maintaining ranking also occurs in several detailed aspects. Explained by Prof. Dr. Nadi Suprapto, Ph.D., Director of Innovation, Ranking and Scientific Publications, like last year, UNESA participated in 9 of the 17 SDGs, namely SDG-1 (no poverty), SDG-3 ( good health and well-being), SDG-4 (quality education).
Furthermore, SDG-5 (gender equality), SDG-8 (decent work and economic growth), SDG-10 (reduced inequalities), SDG-13 (climate action), SDG-16 (peace, justice and strong institutions), and SDG-17 (partnerships for the goals). The best record achieved by UNESA lies in gender equality (SDG-5).
“We are still ranked 5th nationally for SDG-5 (gender equality). Once again this confirms the quality of involvement and equal distribution of women's roles at UNESA. As we know at UNESA, the lecturers, staff and students are not only numerous but productive in their work. "This is our strength in the SDG-5 indicator," he explained.
Meanwhile Prof. Dr. Nurhasan, M.Kes, Chancellor of UNESA wants this achievement to be a trigger to continue to strengthen the involvement and influence of the 'Home of Champions' campus at the international level. The Chancellor, who was also present at THE GSDC 2024 agenda, hopes that the UNESA academic community will increasingly have an active role and influence on the international stage.
"We will encourage lecturers to collaborate in conducting research or learning with campuses and researchers from all over the world. Our students will also look for networks for international experiences such as internships or student exchanges. We need concrete and fast steps to encourage both. "I am sure that when our international activities are strong, ranking increases will follow in the future," he stressed.
The Chancellor, who is familiarly called Cak Hasan, invited the entire community to work hard to prepare themselves to increase UNESA's involvement at the international level. He asked the lecturers to develop various research alternatives and academic activities so they could seize collaboration opportunities with universities from all over the world.
Students also need to be encouraged about their achievements and foreign language skills so they can access various international activities.
“Everyone must prepare themselves. We will help continue to open international networks. "From many meetings with universities around the world, there are actually many opportunities in front of us, but they will only be implemented when we all have a variety of ideas and proposals," he stressed.
