Chairman of the Central Board of BAPOMI Dr. Ir. Sri Gunani Partiwi, M.T., stated that in relation to the Independent Learning and Independent Campus (MBKM) program, students must continue to be encouraged to have both academic and non-academic achievements.
“MBKM has several programs that can be tailored to the interests and abilities of students. The direction is for students to study, pursue and deepen their field of interest which later is expected to produce achievements,” he said.
The professor who also serves as Plt. The Director of Learning and Student Affairs continued, activities on and off campus, including sports competitions (Pomnas) must be part of the student learning process.
“If there are students who make achievements in sports, it is the impact or output of a learning process. Don't just achieve achievements, but must go further on how students can really learn, interact with their fellow athletes. Athletes actually have a role on the field as well as off the field as ambassadors for sports awareness," he explained.
This interaction process, he continued, can build character education which is currently being developed through MBKM. According to him, the generation needed in the future is a generation that not only has hard skills, but also has soft skills.
Road to Olympics
UNESA Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Nurhasan, M.Kes., said that championships in the field of sports cannot be underestimated. Sports achievement is not only a non-academic achievement, but also a part of academic achievement. With sports competitions between students, it is expected to be a strengthening of sports talents in higher education.
"As the president, the Menpora hopes and all of us hope, how can this sport become a culture of healthy living in the community," he said. "That way sports talent can emerge and grow well, then add DBON, which is now at UNESA starting to select. I believe, we can achieve the Olympic achievement target later. The most important thing is that sports must be kept together," he added.
Currently, said Cak Hasan, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has entrusted UNESA to foster 150 athletes in preparation for the 2032 Olympics. The sports that UNESA fostered include swimming, athletics, and archery. "Hopefully, BAPOMI friends will be given convenience and Pomnas will be able to run as expected. From there, talented and accomplished athletes are born who will be able to compete in world-level competitions,” he hoped.
