Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA—In commemoration of Language Month, the Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS) together with the UNESA Center for Excellence in Arts and Culture and the Association of Indonesian Literature Scholars (Hiski) held a "Poetry and Pentigraph Writing Workshop" in Auditorium T14 , FBS, Lidah Wetan Campus, on Wednesday, October 25 2023.
Outstanding Indonesian writer in 2017, Dr. Tengsoe Tjahjono, M.Pd., was the speaker at this activity. He explained about writing poetry. According to him, most beginners fail when writing poetry for the first time. This is due to the desire to produce perfect poetry and the fear that his work will be considered bad.
He advises not to try to create or write good poetry with all kinds of figures of speech, metaphors, hyperbole, and even philosophy. Because whether poetry is good or bad depends on the reader's perspective, the task of beginner poetry creators is to write.
"There is no recipe for writing poetry, and the best way to write poetry for beginners is to read the poetry of previous writers and little by little. "I imitated their style a little and then slowly developed their own unique style of writing poetry," he said.
Then what is more emphasized, added the poetry expert, is that everything that will be done must have materials and a framework. So, the material before writing a poem is to read the work of previous writers, which is then added with the author's experiences, feelings and conditions.
He emphasized that poetry is not prose, it must have beautiful diction, or contain the creator's story. The language style of poetry written does not contain or have a meaningful purpose, but is only a means of depiction. Furthermore, he explained that nouns in poetry do not have to be described, but rather interpreted.
Furthermore, the writer who was educated in South Korea shared his experience where pentigraphs had been rolled out since the 80s, initially written in a newspaper. But because at that time there was no social media, the effect of his actions was not much.
In 2014, when Mr. Tengsoe (his nickname) taught at Korea University for four years, he had a lot of free time because he only taught just three days, the rest is free. His 'free time' is filled with trips to re-develop the idea of the pentigraph.
His work received a positive response from many groups on social media networks. Until 2016, a community was formed on the social media platform, Facebook, called "Kampung Pentigraf Indonesia" which has so far published 12 anthology books.
"Pentigraph writing is based on a very busy world, so people don't have any more "If you have time to read and write for a long time, pentigraphs can be used as an alternative choice," said the 65 year old man.
Pentigraphs themselves are classified as short stories. As there are many short stories in Indonesia and even the world, such as flash stories, mini stories, flash stories, flash fiction, mini fiction, and 140 word stories. The characters are limited, only one or two characters are enough. Then in the third paragraph, create unexpectedness to destroy the reader's expectations.
In this activity, which was attended by hundreds of students, he hopes that the output of this workshop activity can be realized in the form of a joint anthology product. So that the activity is well organized where the students who have been accompanied to make poetry and pentigraphs can be recorded and read by other people too.
"These two things are important, because being recorded makes their work immortal, while being read can inspire other people too so that it becomes an extraordinary expectation that must be realized," he said.[]
