Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA-Three students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) have extended the list of achievements at the State University of Surabaya (UNESA). The team consisting of Arief Rachman Hakim, Varent Nindy Oktaviani Rusmarlina and Nuri Fathriya Mardlatillah managed to beat a number of participants from various major Indonesian universities, including participants from UI and ITB in the big three round. They came out as champions in the 2022 Mathematical Modeling Competition (MMC) by the Department of Mathematics, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), last March.
The supervisor, Dimas Avian Maulana, S.Si., M.Sc., said that MMC is part of the MCF (Mathematic Challenge Festival) which is regularly held by ITB. Originally a national level competition, this year the level was raised to an international level. In this competition, participants are given a topic, Mathematical Modeling or Mathematical Model. “In Mathematics there are several branches of science, including pure and applied Mathematics. This MMC goes into applied mathematics, which doesn't have too many formulas," he explained.
Arief Rachman Hakim explained that they took part in the competition to hone their skills and creativity. "It's rare that there is info on modeling competitions for Mathematics. So excited to participate, plus it was really exciting because all participants both inside and outside Indonesia could participate. By the way, check your ability and creativity to solve problems with mathematical models," he said.
In the competition, Arief and his two friends took part in several stages; starting from the submission of reports on February 17th, then selection of the top 3 finals on March 12th, and entering the final presentation in English on March 20th. Then, the announcement of the winner on March 27. Actually, Arief's team did not expect to be in the top three with participants from UI and ITB. Moreover, the materials and preparations of the participants from the two campuses were neat and beautiful. With high confidence and convincing presentation style for the jury, they finally beat the other two participants and managed to come out as champions.
"Our preparation is quite good, with the help of a mentor. Including topics that will be given to the committee. After there is a topic, then look for references for the construction of the race model. Moreover, the topic of the competition is new to us. So, day-to-day discussions with friends and mentors, finalizing the concept and hats during preparation, finally bear fruit,” said Arief.
During the preparation, said Arief, the team had experienced problems, including the software used for program simulations had to use qualified software, usually from campus. However, because it was not possible, they took the initiative to use their respective laptop software and it turned out to be successful. “External constraints including software can be overcome. There are obstacles that are even more challenging, namely from oneself, feeling lazy, lazy. Thanks to the motivation of fellow members and supervisors and remembering the purpose of participating in the competition, we were finally able to rise up and prove that we can do it,” he explained.
According to Dimas, the most important key in participating in the competition is self-confidence which must always be planted and held firmly. Sometimes many participants have their guts shriveled up when they see their opponent, when in fact they are capable and even more so than their opponents. “In essence, don't let fear overcome everything. That's what we always instill in students and teams," he said.
He hoped that more and more UNESA students would be interested in participating in Mathematics competitions. Because, there are privileges for those who follow it and it can facilitate the learning process and future career. For example, making it easier to participate in work internships or others. “The competition doesn't have to be about winning, but the most important thing is experience. Participants can learn a lot with other participants, share ideas, etc.,” he said. Apparently, this is not the first time the UNESA team has won. Previously, in 2016 he had won 2nd place in the same competition with a different format. [UNESA PR]
