Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA–On the commemoration of International Labor Day, May 1, 2022, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, appreciated the role of workers or workers in the growth of the Indonesian economy. Lecturer at the State University of Surabaya (UNESA) Dr. Agus Machfud Fauzi, M.Sc., assessed that appreciation for workers must be accompanied by efforts to improve workers' welfare through policies that accommodate workers' rights.
The UNESA political sociologist continued, every May Day, of the many demands of workers, the issue of welfare is the priority. Of course, these demands are not just a spice for speeches, but the government must really pay attention to how the conditions of workers in the field are.
“Every year the demands of workers are almost the same, for workers' welfare, minimum wages or low wages, and this year there are still demands for the Job Creation Law and the ratification of the PPRT Bill and rejection of the revision of the PP Law and rejecting the revision of the SP/SB Law. The demands of these workers must be a record of the government in producing pro-labour policies," he explained.
According to him, the level of welfare of workers in Indonesia is still low. Not all companies pay for employee services according to the minimum wage provisions. Prices of basic commodities in the field continue to rise, while wages for jobs are stagnant. The outsourcing system tends to benefit the company and there are many other records that are homework for the government and companies.
On one hand, Labor Day is an opportunity for workers to voice their rights as a policy consideration in the future. Meanwhile, for the state and companies, it should be a momentum in evaluating and increasing awareness of labor rights. The government is the same, the policies so far have accommodated labor rights or are there still records. Well, the note was immediately addressed through wise rules.
Agus Fauzi said that the challenges of workers are quite complex. Apart from the challenges demanded by the workers, there are other challenges as well. Such as competency challenges that are increasingly dynamic. Employees are not only required to be able to work, but also effectiveness and productivity. Not surprisingly, many sectors and jobs have been replaced by the role of technology.
The transformation of the technology sector in the world of work is indeed a threat to workers. Therefore, workers are indeed required to continue to adapt and continue to improve their competence on a regular basis. Competency improvement can be done by the company or by the workers themselves.
“This is where the quality and quality of the workers are tested, including the companies. HR in the company should run according to the times. Adaptation and technology literacy are the keys so that workers and the companies that support them can continue to survive in all circumstances. If not, you have to be prepared to be crushed by the times," he said. [UNESA PR]
