Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA—Western Sydney University (WSU) Australia plans to open a campus in Indonesia, especially in Surabaya. For this purpose, his party collaborated with Surabaya State University (UNESA) as one of its partners. On this basis, the two parties held a meeting at the Rectorate Building, lt. 8 Room 801, Campus II Lidah Wetan, on Tuesday, January 16 2023.
The meeting discussed the focus of future cooperation, which included collaboration on campus openings, student and lecturer exchanges, conferences, research and international publications .
Prof. Amir Mahmood, delegate from Western Sydney University (WSU), Australia said that this collaboration is important, one of which is to implement the goals of higher education and the level of influence of education in the social, economic and research fields.
This is related to the plan to inaugurate the WSU international campus which will be established in Surabaya and become the first foreign campus to focus on undergraduate programs. However, the limited technical guidance regarding the international campus education system in Indonesia makes UNESA a way for WSU to absorb a more effective learning system.
"We want to make UNESA one of the references for the education system on the WSU campus that will will be inaugurated in Indonesia in the future, starting from the material to the learning syllabus. "This collaboration is based on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) number 17 concerning partnerships and sustainable development," he said.
Vice Chancellor for Research, Community Service, Innovation, Publications and Rankings, Junaidi Budi Prihanto, S. KM., M.KM., Ph.D., said that through this forum, UNESA is committed to increasing knowledge, collaboration and cultural exchange between universities.
This also aims to create a more global educational environment and improving the quality of education and research on the international stage.
Several collaborations that are being intensified involve lecturers from several study programs, especially the Electrical Engineering Study Program, Informatics Engineering Study Program, and Data Science Study Program.
Meanwhile , the international conference will involve several faculties, namely the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Economics and Business, and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
Several MKWUs from UNESA have their own composition and implementation. Indonesian as one of the MKWU will be implemented through the Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) program which will focus on scientific writing and everyday language, which can later be converted to WSU.
Prerequisite courses such as Pancasila will be taught before Education Citizenship, this will also be implemented by WSU in its respective study structures and programs. Apart from that, religious courses will also be given according to the choice of foreign students with professors who have capabilities in their fields.
UNESA will assign several lecturers to be allocated to teach at the second campus of Western Sydney University in Indonesia and have the opportunity to delivering the teaching of Compulsory University Subjects (MKWU) such as Indonesian Language, Religious Education, Pancasila and Citizenship.
It is hoped that UNESA lecturers who have foreign graduate degrees can prepare the qualification process. Several bilingual (Indonesian-English) lecturers have also been prepared to teach directly to foreign students from Western Sydney University. This is motivated by the possibility of accepting international students for the second year of operation in 2025.
Internationalization is also being intensified through international conferences and publication of scientific journals at the global level. Several international conferences provided by UNESA include: Mathematics, Informatics, Science, and Education International Conference (MISEIC), International Conference on Vocational Education and Electrical Engineering (ICVEE).
Furthermore, the International Conference on Research and Academic Community Services (ICRACOS), International Conference on Education Innovation (ICEI), and International Conference on Cultural Studies and Applied Linguistics (ICCSAL). On the next occasion, Unesa will provide the opportunity for WSU to co-host and bring in keynote speakers at the conference.
