Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA—Strengthening the nation's competitiveness requires accelerating the readiness of superior human resources and the quality of research and innovation in higher education . This was conveyed by Prof. Ir. Nizam, M.Sc., DIC., Ph.D., Acting Director General of Diktiristek at the XXIX Campus Convention and XXV Annual Meeting of the Indonesian Chancellor's Forum at Graha State University of Surabaya, Campus II Lidah Wetan, Surabaya on Monday, January 15 2024.
The UGM professor first expressed his appreciation to all the chancellors of state and private universities throughout Indonesia for their hard work to create human resources through the Independent Learning Campus (MBKM) program.
Even though there is still a lot of homework to be done, what has been done and achieved must be accelerated together and campus collaboration with the business and industrial world needs to continue to be strengthened.
Talent Preparation
You can see the results from the MBKM program that has been carried out. The output and outcomes of MBKM can be seen from many of its graduates who have been absorbed into the world of work and created new jobs.
Almost 1 million students have left campus bringing with them the knowledge and experience needed by the world of work, so that more confident in entering the world of work. At the same time, the world of work can also see the university talent they need.
"I am touched by the many graduates of universities across the country who are proud to say that they have been accepted into multinational companies and state-owned companies after participating in the independent campus program. MBKM "participate in democratizing access to employment opportunities," said Prof Nizam.
The impact of MBKM on strengthening talent. From INSEAD's publication of The Global Talent Competitiveness Index 2023, Indonesia is the country with the fastest growth in talent readiness in Asia and the second fastest in the world. Thus, Indonesia's ranking jumped far from 89th to 75th in the world in just 5 years.
This is the hard work of higher education which is able to accelerate talent readiness. Of course, there is a lot of homework ahead, but this acceleration should be appreciated by all universities.
This momentum needs to be maintained so that the positive trend in the future can be maintained and continue to climb until it enters the top 50 global talents. Talent readiness is an important attraction for attracting investment and an important foundation for realizing an advanced economy.
Research and Innovation
Indonesia's competitiveness regarding innovation needs to be strengthened. So far, extraordinary progress has been seen in the field through increasingly close collaboration or matching funds between universities and the industrial world.
Downstreaming programs which have an impact on increasing exports also need to be supported by strengthening the ability to provide intellectual value so that all technology does not rely solely on licensing and research results do not stop with publication.
For example, in the development of precursors for batteries, not only does the industry enter Indonesia, but the technology can mastered and contributed through higher education. Therefore, the key research and innovation is in higher education which needs to be supported by budget availability as a long-term investment.
"The nation's competitiveness can continue to be increased by increasing the added value of natural resources through preparing two things, namely strong human resources ", and prepare research and innovation that answers the real need to build sovereignty in various other sectors. I'm sure it can be done if you focus and are serious about it," he concluded.
In addition, the XXIX Campus Convention and the XXV Annual Meeting of the Indonesian Chancellor's Forum (FRI) was attended by around 800 chancellors or heads of universities throughout Indonesia. This year's forum which was held at UNESA was opened by the President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo and attended by the ranks of Ministers of the Advanced Indonesia Cabinet.[]
