Unesa. AC ID. SURABAYA—The East Java petanque team, strengthened by talented young athletes from Surabaya State University (UNESA), performed impressively and won a total of four medals at the XXI Aceh-North Sumatra National Sports Week (PON) 2024.
Based on the results In the match on September 15 2024, the East Java petanque team, the majority of which were students from various UNESA faculties, bagged 1 gold in the women's doubles number by Anjani Dwi Apriliah and Sephia Febriyanti.
Three silvers each earned; Firstly, in the men's team event, Dwi Yanuar Rizki Cahyono Putra, Muhammad Kurniawan Asa Putra, Muhammad Arif Wahindra, and Muhammad Kosyim won. Second, in the men's shooting number by Bagas Syarief Hidayat. Third, in the men's singles number by Dhoni Wahyu Krisbiantoro.
East Java petanque coach and lecturer at the Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences (FIKK) UNESA, Nur Salsabilla Pandhadha Putra explained that East Java sent a total of 8 petanque athletes to PON this time , and all of them are UNESA students. They are supported by four coaches also from UNESA.
With their commitment and hard work, the athletes competed in three matches with further matches scheduled until September 16 2024. Meanwhile, UNESA presented four medals to East Java.
"Alhamdulillah, the success in winning this medal is the result of the dedication and hard work of all team members and coaches. This is not only an individual victory, but also a reflection of collective efforts in advancing the sport of petanque at UNESA and East Java," said the trainer who was familiar with Abil.
Dean of FIKK, Dwi Cahyo Kartiko , revealed that a total of 112 UNESA students were selected to represent the East Java contingent in various sports, including petanque at the XXI Aceh-North Sumatra PON.
He explained that the participation of UNESA students in this national event was not only a matter of pride for the university, but also a clear proof of the sports development carried out by UNESA so far.
"We are optimistic that UNESA students will be able to perform optimally and bring home many medals, including from the petanque branch where they have won gold and silver. This is an extraordinary offering for the region," he added.
The neat performance of the UNESA students received praise from the General Chair of FB FOPI (Indonesian Petanque Sports Federation) as well as the Chancellor of UNESA, Nurhasan or Cak Hasan. The sports science professor advised athletes to focus on providing the best for the region and institution.
"Compete as best as possible. Compete as if you were practicing and enjoy the process and dynamics. Whatever the result, we respect and appreciate it. It will definitely be an inspiration for other athletes and students," said the chancellor and head of the East Java petanque coach.
UNESA, he continued, is committed to improving sports achievements in the regions as an inseparable effort in encouraging the progress of national sports. This achievement is proof that UNESA does not only focus on academic achievements, but also supports students to excel in various fields, including sports.
Cak Hasan hopes that the East Java contingent can achieve maximum results and PON XXI Aceh-North Sumatra 2024 can produce superior athletes who can carry the red and white flag in world level sports competitions.
