Unesa. AC ID. SURABAYA—Children with Special Needs or ABK have special potential and talents that can be developed through a gradual and continuous learning process towards independence. That is what the team of lecturers from the Fine Arts Study Program, Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS) Surabaya State University (UNESA) is trying to achieve.
Lecturers who are members of the community service team or PKM study program are holding design training which the students are taking part in Tunas Kasih Special School (SLB) Jeruk Village, Lakarsantri, Surabaya, early August 2024.
Chairman of PKM, Ika Anggun Camelia said, this activity aims to help solve problems related to learning media, especially in the use of devices software such as a computer or laptop. "This time we are focusing on learning design using PicsArt which is easy to apply," he said.
The activities that students with disabilities or ABK take part in are packaged with strategies that are easy to understand. The students learned in stages in three meetings held. The training starts with an introduction to the application and how to use it, followed by the practical side. "We learn from the students' own photos, the results of which are printed on t-shirts for them," explained Anggun.
This service ended with a strengthening discussion session with Djuli Djatiprambudi, FBS lecturer and the student parents. This session discusses the importance of recognizing and understanding students' potential and characteristics, which is an important basis for teachers in teaching or training students. This discussion also discusses aspects of needs at the school which will be followed up in the form of the next service program. .
Anggun added that this service is important as part of UNESA's commitment to strengthen learning in special schools and to produce crew members who are empowered and independent in the future. SLB, he continued, is an educational institution that provides special services for students with disabilities or children with special needs (ABK) according to their types of needs.
There are those who are physically disabled, deaf, autistic, Down syndrome, and various other special needs . Children with special needs have the right to adequate education, so it is important to optimize education for them. One of the challenges is the lack of use of learning media that is appropriate to the needs of children with special needs, both in the context of segregative and inclusive education.[]
