Unesa.ac.id., SURABAYA--The Directorate of the Center for Excellence in Arts and Culture (PUSB), Surabaya State University (UNESA) is committed to making Indonesian arts and culture global. They introduced East Javanese dance culture to students of various universities in Thailand some time ago.
The activity which took place at the Indonesian School Sports Building in Bangkok, Thailand was part of the Community Service (PKM) program, an international collaboration scheme which was attended by around 166 students from dozens of universities in Thailand.
Chairman of PKM Dr. Trisakti, M.Sc., said that they introduced the Suramadu dance to Thai students. The Suramadu dance has a philosophy that is associated with a bridge connecting the island of Java with the island of Madura, which is currently also an icon of East Java.
With this bridge, it is hoped that it can facilitate aspects of transportation, the economy, and facilitate all aspects of life between communities in the two areas.
This Suramadu dance work was first launched at the same time as the inauguration of the Suramadu Bridge on June 9 2009. "In this activity, we also taught the students there directly about dance movements from start to finish," he said.
Suramadu Dance is the result of a collaboration of music and dance movements from the Surabaya and Madura regions, which depicts the joy and enthusiasm of the people of Surabaya and Madura in welcoming tourists visiting the area.
"The choreographer of this dance is Diaztiarni. Because this is the context in which students there (Thailand; ed) studied it, it was re-choreographed according to training needs, so that it is easier to understand and practice. However, this does not change the values and philosophy," he explained.
