
Promovendus, Mardi explained and defended his dissertation before the board of examiners in the open examination for the doctoral program (S-3) in Vocational Education, Unesa Postgraduate School.
Unesa.ac.id. SURABAYA—S3 Vocational Education Study Program, Postgraduate School, Surabaya State University (Unesa) held an open doctoral program exam with promovendus Mardi which took place at the Sports Psychology Integrated Building, Unesa Campus 2 Lidah Wetan, on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.
The promotion presented and defended a dissertation entitled 'Factors that Influence the Employability of Vocational School Students at the Center for Excellence in Animation Skills Competency in East Java.'
He was tested by a board of examiners who consisting of professors or internal and external experts led directly by Bambang Yulianto (prof) as chief examiner and Director of the Postgraduate School Unesa.
Meanwhile, the ranks of examiners and promoters consist of; Ratna Suhartini (prof), Ekohariadi (prof); Any Sutiadiningsih (prof); Tri Wrahatnolo (prof); Martadi; and Mahendra Wardhana as an external examiner from FDKBD ITS.
Mardi's research focuses on analyzing the direct and indirect effects of teacher attractiveness in teaching, student motivation in learning, self-efficacy, and ability to use video tutorials on the level of employability of students in the field of animation at 3 Animation Center Vocational Schools in East Java, namely: SMKN 12 Surabaya, SMKN 11 Malang, and SMKN 2 Singosari.
In front of the examiners, promovendus Mardi explained the importance of employability for vocational school students. Employability includes students' hard skills and soft skills, which include students' interest in the subject matter, learning goals, and the effort made in learning.

He emphasized the importance of soft skills such as communication and English. According to him, hard skills must be balanced with soft skills to increase students' employability.
"I see that not all vocational school students can immediately work when they graduate , because of their lack of focus during the learning period due to a lack of motivation to learn," he said.
Apart from his findings in the field, teachers also lack enthusiasm for teaching, and lack competence in the fields they teach. For example, in the field of animation, teachers' abilities are only basic.
The findings, students said that their teachers were still unable to provide appropriate examples in making animations such as depicting various characters and providing effects. in every animation movement.
"This means that teachers do not yet meet industry standards. The solution in my opinion is that teachers must upgrade their skills and be trained in the industry so that they can make animations, they must comply with industry standards," he explained .
Process The promovendus study and research received appreciation from the chief examiner and Director of the Postgraduate School, Bambang Yulianto. He said that promovendus was tenacious and diligent, so he was able to complete his doctoral studies in 2.5 years.
“This is a good example, promovendus is very diligent and was able to graduate quickly. I hope that many will follow in his footsteps, even though he is busy working, his enthusiasm is extraordinary, diligent in studying, diligent in guidance. "I hope this will be a motivation for others," he said.[*]
