Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA—Javanese Language and Literature Education Undergraduate Study Program, Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS) Surabaya State University (UNESA) held a shadow puppet performance at Field T1 FBS, on Monday, September 4 2023.
The performance with the play "Bantening Gegayuhan" is a form of the study program's commitment to preserving traditional culture. With the collaboration of two puppeteers from students; Wisnu Jati Pamungkas and Muhammad Sufa Syahadila, the performance not only amazes the audience, but also provides a moral message.
The performance is filled with dialogue full of humor that is entertaining and also teaches important life values. Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Arts, Syafi'ul Anam, Ph.D. said that this activity illustrates the importance of collaboration from various elements in maintaining and promoting culture.
The community can better appreciate and experience the richness of local culture without having to abandon foreign culture which is also valuable. "Activities like this are a strong trigger to love local culture along with global cultural diversity," he said.
He continued, awareness of culture, both local and global, gives hope that cultural heritage will continue to be appreciated and preserved by future generations. This is also shown by students who still appreciate and absorb the beauty of culture, which will become a valuable asset for the future.
Erdin Syah Putra Gustian, chief executive, said that this initiative illustrates how important it is to preserve and love culture in the modern era. . Too often, local culture is forgotten or displaced by the influence of more dominant foreign culture.
This wayang performance also proves that local culture can remain relevant and valuable, even in the context of globalization.

The play told tells of a character named Ekalaya, a king from Paranggelung and an archer. Ekalaya felt that his abilities were not enough, so he studied with an expert, namely Mahaguru Drona (Durna).
However, this desire was hindered by his wife, Anggraini. With his great desire, Ekalaya was willing to leave Anggraini and his kingdom in order to gain knowledge.
He also succeeded in fulfilling various requirements to become his teacher's student, one of which was by cutting off his thumb which contained the Mustika ring, a ring that gives humans extraordinary power when worn on that finger.
After successfully becoming a student of Mahaguru Ekalaya was compared to Arjuna who was also the greatest archer and was nicknamed Palguna-Palgunadi. Long story short, Ekalaya finally died at the hands of Arjuna as a result of a fight against one another by Aswatama, Mahaguru's son who was crazy about Anggraini.
The woman followed her husband to the training ground, which sparked a deadly conflict between them. From this story, meaning can be drawn, Jer Basuki Mawa Beya teaches people to always work hard to achieve what they dream of. [*]
