Inauguration of the Mandarin Confucius Institute Unesa (CI Unesa) Teaching Point at Cheng Hoo School Surabaya.
SURABAYA— Confucius Institute Unesa (CI Unesa) in collaboration with the Indonesian Cheng Hoo Education Foundation (YPCI) launched the Mandarin Teaching Point at Cheng Hoo School in the courtyard of the Cheng Hoo Mosque in Surabaya on Thursday, July 18 2024.
The inauguration event was attended by various honored guests as well as important officials from Surabaya State University (Unesa), the Indonesian Cheng Hoo Education Foundation (YPCI), and representatives of the Chinese government by the PRC Consul General in Surabaya.
This event opened with a lion dance followed by recitations in three languages, and the symbolic handover of a plaque by the Consul General of the PRC Mr. Xu Yong, Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS) Unesa Syafi'ul Anam, Ph.D., Director of the Confucius Institute, and chairman of the Indonesian Cheng Hoo Education Foundation.
In his remarks, the Consul General of the PRC Mr. Xu Yong expressed his appreciation for this collaboration and hoped that this program could become a stronger bridge between Indonesia and China in the fields of education and culture.
The Dean of FBS Unesa, Syafi'ul Anam, Ph.D., emphasized the importance of Mandarin language and culture education as a symbol of tolerance and inter-cultural understanding.
Chairman of the Indonesian Cheng Hoo Mosque Foundation, Abdullah Nurawi (Pak Awi), added that it is hoped that this teaching point collaboration will be able to equip students in the future.
The inauguration of this teaching point is not only a symbol of strengthening quality Mandarin language education, but also a form of tolerance.
In particular , with Cheng Hoo being real evidence of acculturation that can provide a message of tolerance and harmony. Cooperation and Community Service The Mandarin teaching point at Cheng Hoo School is the first teaching point in an Islamic school.
This program aims to provide quality Mandarin language education for Cheng Hoo School students and involves native Mandarin teachers from China (laoshi), which is expected to provide an authentic and in-depth learning experience.
This teaching point program is routine and ongoing. This program is also part of the implementation of the community service program (PKM) which collectively and integratedly involves lecturers from Unesa's Mandarin Education Undergraduate Study Program, Unesa's Confucius Institute, and Unesa's Research and Community Service Institute (LPPM).
On the occasion of the inauguration of this teaching point, a collaboration was signed between the parties involved as a form of commitment to community development through Mandarin language education and Indonesian-Chinese cultural exchange.In addition to the teaching point at Cheng Hoo School, CI Unesa has several partner teaching points that have been established for a long time in various educational institutions in Surabaya and its surroundings, including, Unesa's Mandarin Language Education Undergraduate Study Program, Widya Kartika University (Uwika) Surabaya's Mandarin Language Bachelor's Study Program.
The signing of the cooperation forms a commitment to community development through Mandarin language education and Indonesian-Chinese cultural exchange.
Next, Little Sun Three Language School Surabaya, Yong Chun Educational Institution Surabaya, SMP 12 Muhammadiyah Gresik, Faculty of Economics and Business, Seventeen August University (Untag) Surabaya, STIKES Hang Tuah Surabaya, and Poltekes Kemenkes Surabaya.
This activity was attended by the Consul General of the PRC Mr. Xu Yong; Dean of FBS Syafi'ul Anam, Ph.D., Chair of PWNU East Java, K.H. Abdul Hakim Mahfudz (Gus Kikin); Chairman of the East Java Muhammadiyah, Dr dr. Sukadiono, M.M; Chairperson of the Cheng Hoo Indonesian Education Foundation, Siti Fatimah Sukri; Chairman of the Indonesian Cheng Hoo Mosque Foundation, Abdullah Nurawi.
Also present was the Head of the Surabaya City Education Department, Ir. Yusuf Masruh, M.M; Director of the Confucius Institute UNESA, Sueb, M.Pd (Indonesian side), and Mr. Yang Yuan (Chinese side); Secretary of the Confucius Institute Unesa Anis Trisusana, M.Pd; a team of Mandarin lecturers; a team of Mandarin Native Speaker Teachers (laoshi) from China; and the Community Service implementation team for the Unesa FBS Mandarin Language Education Study Program and the UNESA Professional Education and Certification Institute chaired by Tiffany Qorie, S.S., M.TCSOL.
In addition, the Unesa Confucius Institute is a Mandarin Language Center institution which aims to develop Mandarin language education, Indonesian-Chinese cultural exchange, and further education consultancy. This institution is managed by Surabaya State University (Unesa) and Central China Normal University (CCNU).[]
