Prof. Sedat Gumus emphasized that teaching is the core of the implementation of education. Therefore, its quality must be monitored and supervised through continuous supervision with a multi-approach.
Unesa.ac.id. , SURABAYA— After sharing his experiences and research in front of lecturers from the Faculty of Education (FIP), Surabaya State University (UNESA), Assoc. Prof. Sedat Gumus then lectured in front of dozens of students from the international class of Educational Management (MP) in Lecture Room O5, FIP Building, Monday, December 9 2024.
To the class of 2023, the professor from The Education University of Hong Kong gave a lecture entitled "Asian Approaches to Educational Supervision: Theory and Practice." He discusses the concepts of educational supervision, including the important role of instructional leadership in improving the quality of teaching.
Instructional leadership models include various aspects such as managing learning programs, monitoring and evaluating teaching, as well as creating a positive learning climate. “Actually, education in Indonesia is not much different from that in my home country, Türkiye. "So I am quite familiar with the teaching methods here," he said.
According to him, educational supervision is a formative and ongoing process. He also emphasized the importance of conducting pre-observation and post-observation to build constructive dialogue between supervisors and teachers.
Educational supervision is very important to improve the quality of teaching and learning at every level of education. Effective supervision not only helps teachers reflect on their practice in the classroom, but also encourages the creation of a positive and collaborative learning culture in the school environment.
“Supervision is not to look for teacher mistakes, but aims to help teachers to analyze and reflect on their teaching practices in class through the help of other professionals, such as school principals or colleagues," he explained.

Prof. Sedat Gumus together with MP undergraduate study program coordinators, lecturers and international class students UNESA.
In addition, he also introduced educational supervision techniques that can be applied in classroom observations, such as collecting qualitative and quantitative data to provide detailed and constructive feedback.
Good observation data is not just about observing teacher behavior in the process learning, but also its effect on student responses and learning.
The lecturer of Turkish descent also emphasized the importance of this method in increasing and improving the quality of teaching, without any judgment or assessment in the process.
Supervision, apart from being tasked with providing support, must also provide suggestions and instructions to improve teaching methods.
Sedat Gumus' presence was enthusiastically welcomed by the students. Devita Fitriana Susanto, a student who took part in the guest lecture, admitted that she was very happy with this opportunity. He feels fortunate to be able to study directly with experts from the Hong Kong Education University.
“I gained many new insights into how educational supervision practices are applied abroad, as well as seeing the differences with those in Indonesia. "This really opened my horizons," he said.[*]
