SURABAYA—In order to increase reading interest and literacy in the academic community of the 'Home of Champions' campus, Surabaya State University through the UPT Library inaugurated a reading room or creative lounge and home theater in the Lidah Wetan Campus II Central Library Building, Thursday, September 12 2024.
This event was attended by the Vice Chancellor I for Academic, Student and Alumni Affairs; Deputy Chancellor II for Law, Management, Finance, Resources and Business; Head of UPT Library; deans, deputy deans, directors and heads of sub-directorate as well as lecturers and students around the rectorate.
The Head of UPT Suroto Library said that the activities which started from 15 August – 12 September 2024 were in commemoration of Library Visit Day which falls on 14 September and UNESA's 60th Anniversary.
There were many series of activities held, starting from story telling competitions at elementary/MI levels throughout Greater Surabaya and UNESA students, book exhibitions with UNESA partners, to the inauguration of reading rooms and home theaters.
"We started from August 15 to September 12 for a series of 29 days, starting from SD/MI story telling followed by students, book exhibitions, to the inauguration of the reading room and home theater," he said.
CINEMA BAK: UNESA home theater can be used to explore and discuss literature in audio-visual form such as documentaries.
He added , this reading room is an additional facility to improve the quality of library services. Visitors can use this space for reading, discussions and other activities.
Meanwhile, home theater is also a new form of UPT Library service, so that visitors can use it to explore and discuss literature in audio-visual form such as documentaries, and others.
"The principles of our work and services are data integration, digitalization and standardization. The aim is to facilitate and improve the quality of service," said professor of sports education, Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences (FIKK).
The party is committed to continuing to provide the best service, by improving information and technology. "The two rooms that have just been inaugurated will later be opened to the public, although students and the UNESA academic community remain the main priority," he said

The event continued with the distribution of prizes for the winners of the story telling competition at the SD/MI level throughout Greater Surabaya, at the UNESA student level, giving appreciation for the innovation of the UNESA reading room staff, and selection of the 2024 Reading Ambassador.
Cindy Laksita, as the selected reading ambassador from FIKK, the Bachelor of Nutrition study program, admitted that she was happy when she was chosen as the 2024 Reading Ambassador. Her motivation for taking part in this competition was because she loved reading books and living from a young age. in an environment that fully supports literacy activities from an early age.
“I feel the benefits of reading books, and there is a saying that books are a window to the world ," he said.
The selected Reading Ambassador expressed his hopes and next steps that he would take after becoming the selected reading ambassador, "he hopes that he can hold this mandate well and can increase students' reading level and their love for reading books ," he said.[]
