Unesa.ac.id SURABAYA—Surabaya State University (UNESA) continues to realize its collaboration with various partners in the form of activity programs one of which is International Summer Course 2024, the result of collaboration between the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) UNESA with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), and PT Apexindo Pratama Duta Tbk (APEX).
This Summer Course was officially opened at the Amaris Hotel, on Monday, 12 August 2024. The program which runs until 17 August 2024 with the theme "Superfood in Indonesia" was attended by 24 participants from various countries, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Iran , to Saudi Arabia.This program offers international students opportunities for academic advancement, building global networks, and cultural exchange, with the aim of promoting a more sustainable future through exploiting Indonesia's superfood potential.
This activity, which aims to explore and promote Indonesia's superfood potential through a series of activities, combines an academic approach with cultural exploration, providing a platform for participants to apply knowledge in food science.
Topics explored include biotechnology, the nutritional benefits of tempe, fermentation processes, and food waste management.
By exploring Indonesia's superfood potential, this program is in line with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Sustainable Development Goals (TPB), especially for the second aim, without starvation; the twelfth goal is about responsible consumption and production, and the thirteenth goal is about climate action.
This program not only focuses on academic aspects, but also includes a tour of the city of Surabaya which allows participants to experience the historical sites and cultural diversity of the city the. This provides a unique opportunity for participants to gain a deeper understanding of how superfoods can contribute to sustainable agriculture and food security.
After the opening, participants engage in a variety of courses on topics such as biotechnology in food science, Indonesian culinary , fermentation, and processing of food waste through the manufacture of eco-enzymes.

In addition , participants will also visit various iconic places in Surabaya such as the Ten November Museum, Submarine Monument, Surabaya Square, and Suramadu Bridge, as well as take part in workshops on making tempeh, tapai, and yogurt. This program will close with an Indonesian Independence Day ceremony and traditional games.
In his speech, Dimas Ivan Maulana, as PIC International Summer Course 2024, emphasized that this program is a strategic step for UNESA to accelerate academic achievement and institutional involvement on the global stage.
"This activity is our effort to overcome complex challenges through innovation. We invite you (participants) to research the great potential of Indonesian superfood," he said.
Deputy Chancellor III for Research, Innovation, Rankings, Publications and the UNESA Science Center, Bambang Sigit Widodo, emphasized the importance of this activity in addressing the issue of food security and global prosperity.
The UNESA Fisipol lecturer also emphasized the importance of collaboration between countries in facing global challenges related to food security, nutrition and public health.
The 2024 International Summer Course is expected to make a significant contribution to the development of food science, sustainable agriculture, global food security and cultural exchange between countries.
"Hopefully this event can have a positive impact on participants and the wider community in understanding the potential of Indonesian superfood for a sustainable future," he hoped. This activity was attended by the Dean of FMIPA, Director of Student and Alumni Affairs and his staff. Also representatives from Universiti Sains Malaysia, and PT Apexindo Pratama Duta. []
