Unesa. AC ID. SURABAYA—Surabaya State University (UNESA) Fisipol Week presents a series of activities, one of which is a book review of Sociology of Bonek: Understanding the Roots of Violence in the Behavior of Bonek Supporters in the Hall on the 3rd floor, Fisipol building, Campus 1 Ketintang, on Tuesday, July 23 2024.
The book was written by a lecturer at the 'House of Champions' campus, namely Raden Roro Nanik Setyowati. He explained that Bonek supporters had a big influence in the history of the world of Indonesian football. Their loyalty to the club they support, namely Persebaya, is beyond doubt.
In its journey, the dynamics of the world of supporters, including puppets, cannot be separated from conflicts that need to be taken into account. This book reviews the historical background of Persebaya and Bonek, and identifies the factors that influence the violent behavior of Bonek supporters, such as age, education and economic instability.
The book also discusses violent subcultures in football and theories related to violent behavior of supporters. "The dynamics highlighted include the perception of society which sometimes only sees the negative side of dolls who actually also have positive aspects such as loyalty, solidarity and willingness to sacrifice," he said.
The author also explains why he had to write this book. “I grew up around football. Surabaya people must know Persebaya, they must know Bonek. People usually see dolls as bad, but don't see the positive side. That's what motivated me to write this," he said.
Unesa Campus Bonek Coordinator, Saktyo Manjuto, also revealed that it is hoped that the launch of this book can change the negative stigma towards Bonek supporters into a more positive one. They are trying to change the negative stigma through educational activities such as discussions, photography exhibitions and other annual events.
With this book, it is hoped that the public can better understand the root of the problem of violence that occurs among Bonek supporters and provide a more insightful view. more holistic view of this phenomenon. Hopefully this book can become an important reference for researchers, academics and practitioners in understanding the behavior of football supporters in Indonesia.
For him, this book review held by the PMP-KN Democracy Lab, Fisipol is the first step in changing negative stigma towards puppet fans and encouraging a cultural approach in dealing with the issue of violence in the world of football.
"Hopefully with better understanding, the public can give a more positive appreciation to Bonek supporters and make football a safe and enjoyable means of entertainment for all parties," he said.[*]
