UNESA leadership and historians welcome the visit of Yasuoka Shotaro and his family to UNESA.
Unesa.ac.id, SURABAYA—Surabaya State University (UNESA) welcomed guests from Japan, namely Dr. Yasuoka Shotaro with a number of his family on Tuesday, 11 June 2024. They were welcomed by relevant leaders and UNESA historians in the Meeting Room, 7th floor, Lidah Wetan Campus 2 Rectorate building, Surabaya.
In the meeting it was revealed that Yasuoka Shotaro is the great-grandson of the former general of the Japanese military governor in Surabaya, Yasuoka Masaomi, who died in Indonesia around 1945.
His presence at the 'House of Champions' campus aims to collaborate with UNESA history experts to search for information regarding the position of the grave of the The former Japanese general whose location is still unknown.
Yasuoka expressed his desire to know and see his great-grandfather's grave. On that basis, he attended UNESA. Apart from that, he also wanted to see firsthand life in Surabaya, where his great-grandfather used to work.

"Most "No, I want to see what life is like in Surabaya, so that I can imagine my great-grandfather serving here," he said.
His presence at UNESA was not without reason. Yasuoka received a recommendation from Prof. Hayashi Eichi, a Japanese historian who specializes in Indonesian history.
"Professor Hayashi recommended his acquaintance who is a history expert at UNESA, namely Prof. Nasution, for me to meet, and today I was able to meet him at UNESA, " he added.
On that occasion, UNESA historian, Prof. Drs. Nasution, M.Hum., M.Ed., Ph.D., said that the task of exploring war-era graves was very challenging and this was part of UNESA's humanitarian mission.
Prof. Nasution added that he invited Yasuoka Shotaro and his family to hold a meeting in Surabaya so that the family could get direct information regarding life in Surabaya.
"The goal is so that Yasuoka Shotaro and his family can experience and understand the life of his great-grandfather while serving in Surabaya "At that time, as a campus that has a History study program, UNESA must be one step ahead in helping others," he said. []
