Unesa.ac.id. SURABAYA—Indonesian football player and student of the Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences (FIKK), Surabaya State University (UNESA), Rachmat Irianto became the torch bearer for the opening flame of the 2024 ASEAN University Games (AUG) XXI.
After the opening ceremony AUG at the International Basketball Arena, UNESA on Tuesday, June 25 2024, the Persib Bandung midfielder admitted that he was happy to be able to represent his campus and Indonesian athletes in the sacred procession opening the ASEAN member country's student sports competition.
"I'm proud, because UNESA and Indonesia can host this very prestigious event," said the man who had completed his undergraduate program at FIKK UNESA.
He added that being part of AUG made him even more motivated to continue to provide the best for world of sports.
For the athlete who is familiarly called Rian, what he did at the AUG opening procession was not limited to carrying a torch, but there was a moral responsibility as a sports athlete who of course had to be a role model for others.
Apart from that, there is also a responsibility as a host which indirectly encourages every athlete or host sports activist to give their best to welcome athletes from other countries who are none other than ASEAN athlete brothers.
He hopes that the AUG can run well, each country can show their best games and matches and can bring achievements that will make their respective countries proud.
For the Indonesian contingent, he also hopes that this AUG can maximized to show off our abilities and skills in the eyes of the international community.
"We must work together to make this AUG a memorable competition for all, that's what is important in my opinion," he concluded. []
