Unesa.ac.id., SURABAYA–There are many ways things you can do to celebrate Kartini Day which is celebrated every April 21. One way is to link course learning with the Kartini theme, as was done by the English Literature study program, Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS) on Monday, April 22 2024.
Not only that, all students and lecturers wore kebaya that combined with batik for women, and traditional clothing or batik for men.
Dr. Ali Mustofa, S.S., M.Pd., English Literature Undergraduate Study Program Coordinator said that every lecturer who takes courses on Monday must link all courses to the Kartini theme. This had been coordinated previously with the lecturers in the English Literature study program.
As in the Reading for Research course, for example, the lecturer conveyed material on how to write and analyze the content of articles, but the articles that were raised namely the topic of Kartini's views and journey through her letters.
The aim of commemorating Kartini Day is to popularize Kartini's spirit and life struggles which color her struggle, culture and gender identity. "Kartini is a national hero, her spirit and struggle must penetrate the consciousness of the nation's generation through commemorations like this," he said.
Furthermore, he revealed that this activity was an effort to make society more gender literate. He hopes that with lectures like this, it can help the younger generation to remember what Kartini really wanted for change in the nation and national identity.
The atmosphere of the Kartini Day class was welcomed by the students, they were not only enthusiastic about their clothes. who wore kebaya, but also through their enthusiasm in exploring Kartini's spirit and struggle in class discussions.
As expressed by Yulian Dwi Nugroho, a fourth semester student at Misa. He admitted that his class was increasingly lively with discussions of national figures and heroes whose thoughts and struggles were always interesting to discuss.
"In the Research Methodology in Literature class I discussed and analyzed Kartini's poetry using the PEARL method or point, evidence , analysis, repeat, link and TEEL or topic, explanation, example, and link," he explained.
This is different from what Falia Febriyanti does in classResearch Methodology in Linguistics. They were asked to choose several poetry titles by Kartini and discuss issues about gender.
Different but still consistent events occurred in Azizah's class, Language in Society. This student who is familiar with the world of photography said that during class they were faced with laptops to make posters with a Kartini theme which involved linguistic issues. "Happy Kartini Day, happiness and empowerment for all women," said Azizah. []
