Unesa. AC ID. SURABAYA—The UNESA Labschool Institute is aggressively improving quality through strengthening human resources and transforming learning. One of the concrete steps taken was holding a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on Thursday, October 10 2024, at the 9th floor of the Rectorate Building, Campus 2 Lidah Wetan.
FGD with the theme " Enhancing School Quality: Strategies for Success" presents Kieron Sheehy, professor from The Open University of UK as a speaker along with professor and Director of the UNESA Labschool Institute, Sujarwanto.
This event focuses on strategies, handling and improving quality education and learning through strengthening existing human resources.
On that occasion, Sujarwanto hoped that the school principals who were participants would be motivated and encouraged to look for new breakthroughs, both in terms of policy and learning practices in schools.

Professor and Director of the UNESA Labschool Institute, Sujarwanto emphasized that improving the quality of schools starts with improving the quality of learning in the classroom as the core of the educational process.
According to him, effective leadership cannot be carried out individually. Instead, team collaboration is needed in the concept of sharing leadership, which functions to strengthen teamwork and encourage the creation of effective strategies. better in improving the quality of schools.
In the discussion session, Kieron Sheehy or who is familiarly called Prof. Kieron shared the concept of student interest-based education which has been implemented in the UK. There, schools are divided into schools that focus on interests the students.
This system allows students to develop their potential optimally based on the interests they have from an early age.
Even though the system is still questionable about its possibility of implementation in Indonesia, he encourages teachers to consider the challenges and opportunities that may be faced in adapting this concept in the Indonesian educational environment.

In this FGD, participants from teachers and school principals gained insight into how education in the UK is implemented based on student interests.
This discussion gave rise to various responses and ideas from teachers, including the importance of paying attention to local conditions and the culture of Indonesian education, which tends to apply a common system for all students.
Teachers are also expected to be able to study further how this interest-based approach can be adapted to the Indonesian context to improve the quality of education in the future.
This FGD is expected to equalize perceptions regarding effective school management by means of look for patterns that support the realization of the vision and mission towards an internationally reputable school.
